Domestic Energy Bills forecast to Reach £3,000.00 by 2020

27/11/2013

£3,000* – the amount domestic energy bills could reach by 2020. Increases of around 10% have been announced in autumn 2013 and this will only continue in one direction. While individual householders cannot influence these rises, they can take steps to ensure their heating systems are more efficient. Fitting modern digital heating controls to an oil or gas fire, for example, provides better heating control, yielding significant energy savings as well as improved comfort.  For households on oil or LPG heating systems, an Air Source Heat Pump becomes an attractive option, providing significant energy savings and a decent return on investment. For a discussion on whether heating controls or a heat pump are a viable option contact me now on 07745 80 37 23 or email [email protected]

The Heat Is On

The Energy Saving Trust carried out a field study to monitor the performance of residential heat pumps between 2008 and 2013; their new report, The Heat Is On, can be downloaded below.

The study was undertaken in two phases to determine the performance of heat pumps in homes across the UK.  Both air source and ground source heat pumps were included.  Phase 2, undertaken from 2010–2013, undertook a comprehensive study of 44 heat pumps to investigate the variation in performance shown in Phase 1, a number of these had performed poorly. 32 sites had customised interventions undertaken and 6 new sites were installed largely in accordance with new MCS standards.

The Energy Savings Trust found results from performance monitoring were encouraging, with a general improvement in performance.

Users’ perceptions were positive: heat pump users were more satisfied with their systems after the Phase 2 interventions. A large and significant proportion stated they would recommend a heat pump to a friend.

Based upon the results of the study, the Energy Saving Trust is convinced that heat pumps can play a significant part to help the UK reach its targets for reducing carbon emissions. Heat pumps, installed to new MCS standards, can provide an effective, efficient solution for heating in many homes.

Groundbreaking New range of Heat Pumps from Dimplex

23/6/2013

With the launch of the new A Class range, Dimplex have achieved a significant improvement in heat pump performance. Operational at outdoor temperatures as low as -20oC and with the capacity to heat water to 65oC, these remarkable machines will heat 4 and 5 bedroom properties*, using existing radiators**.  The quoted ‘Seasonal Performance Factor’ (SPF) of 3.6, easily outperforms other models on the market. The A Class will be of particular benefit for family homes in rural areas which are off the mains gas network. Now, these properties can benefit from heating costs less than those on mains gas, currently around 5p per kWhr, and significantly lower than oil, LPG or coal.

* Property suitability depends on size, type of construction, level of insulation and draught proofing.  Suitability would be subject to a heat loss survey and calculation in accordance with MCS requirements.
** Radiator suitability would be subject to survey in accordance with MCS Radiator Star Rating requirements.
