As future gas and oil supplies become scarce and expensive, concerns over the future reliability of supplies increase. That, along with with the decline in output from our own resources in the North Sea, means that we need to turn to more reliable sources of energy.
Air source heat pumps, a new environmentally friendly alternative source of household heating, is now available. This new generation of heat pumps are powered by Scotland's burgeoning renewable electricity sector and offer long-term cheap heating and hot water supply for householders and small business.
Who would benefit from an air source heat pump? If you can answer yes to the following questions, an air source heat pump could be for you:
The Sanyo CO2 ECO Heating System extracts heat energy from the air, through a reverse refrigeration cycle to heat your home. Used for several years in Scandinavia this process is increasingly being introduced to other parts of Europe as consumers look to their longer term heating needs. A Sanyo CO2 ECO Heating System offers:
The Sanyo CO2 ECO Heating System uses refrigerant R744, CO2 in a sealed system. This is a natural refrigerant gas which has none of the harmful global warming potential characteristics of hydrofluorocarbon gases used in other refrigeration systems.
In Japan, the Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry has been studying heat pumps using CO2 as a refrigerant since 1995. They found, by theoretical analysis, that the CO2 cycle has unique characteristics, it can produce hot water up to 90 deg. C, and achieve a higher Coefficient of Performance (COP) than conventional refrigerants.
A joint programme to develop a CO2 heat Pump for residential use was initiated in 1998. CO2 heat pumps were launched on the market in Japan in May 2001. In Japan they are marketed as 'Eco Cute' heat pumps, which refers to their use of CO2 as refrigerant gas. Since then, a number of companies have come on to the market to improve the product and develop a range of variants to meet growing market demand.
Sanyo have developed their system for colder regions and worked closely with a Swedish manufacturer to develop the CO2 ECO Heating System for the Scandanavian and European markets, where it was launched in 2004. Sanyo have sold over 130,000 units in Japan, and 7,500 units in Scandanavia and Europe.

Sustainable Energy - Without Hot Air, David MacKay FRS, a professor of physics at Cambridge University's excellent book is a readily accessible guide to Britain's energy requirements across all sectors, now and in a future where renewable energy plays an increasingly significant role. Use it to debunk 'greenwash' and make up your own mind about our future energy sources and requirements based on the laws of physics.
